IN SEARCH FOR A COMFORT ZONE

'In search for a comfort zone’ is an ongoing project that examines gender interaction and intimacy in Indian urban and peri-urban public spaces. Public display of affection is not acceptable in Indian society at large. Couples and lovers have become victims of moral policing by locals and even by the authorities. During my field visits, I noticed some authorities also installed defensive devices such as surveillance systems and armrests in the middle of the benches to control the physical behavior of the romancing couples. However, this social disciplinary design may not be seen in India in physical form everywhere but it does exist in the perception of Indian society! The project sheds light on the unspoken rules of being intimate in public spaces and questions the complex politics between public and private space and vice versa.
